Chepauk Super Gillies and Dindigul Dragons will square off for a berth in the final of the TNPL when the two sides meet in Qualifier 2 at the NPR College ground here on Friday.

Super Gillies have been the standout team of the tournament, winning all seven league matches, but was given a reality check in Qualifier 1 by IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, as they slumped to a chastening 79-run defeat.

Dragons, the reigning champions, meanwhile, produced a clinical performance against Trichy Grand Cholas, winning by six wickets in the Eliminator and will have a spring in their step going into the knockout clash.

For Super Gillies, the loss to Tamizhans exposed the team’s over-reliance on B. Aparajith and Vijay Shankar to do the heavy lifting with the bat. The four-time champions will need the other batters to make meaningful contributions and use their batting depth to get back to winning ways.

Dragons, in contrast, will look to repeat their feat from last year, when they won three playoff contests and clinched their maiden title.

The ‘home’ team displayed its superior bowling prowess, led by skipper R. Ashwin, whose all-round performance (3/28 & 83) helped brush aside Grand Cholas.

However, there is a concern surrounding pace spearhead Sandeep Warrier who walked off at the start of his third over clutching his hamstring.

During their previous meeting, Super Gillies prevailed by eight runs after Dragons made a mess of the chase from a position of strength. Ashwin’s men now have a chance to settle the score and keep their title defence campaign alive.
