The Central government is currently reviewing a major infrastructure proposal for Mumbai Metro’s Line 11, a 17.4-km entirely underground corridor stretching from Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has finalized the route and submitted it for formal approval, with funding assistance sought from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).


Route and Key Features

The proposed Line 11 will run through some of Mumbai’s most densely populated and commercially important areas. The planned route includes Anik Depot → Wadala → Byculla → Nagpada → Bhendi Bazaar → Crawford Market → Horniman Circle → CSMT → Gateway of India.

Spanning 17.4 km, the line will feature 14 stations, out of which 13 will be underground, and one at-grade terminal located at Anik Depot. This makes it one of the most technically challenging metro projects in the city.


Integrated Transport Hub at Anik Depot

A standout feature of Line 11 is the vertically stacked integrated depot at Anik Depot, which will combine both metro and BEST bus operations. This innovative approach aims to optimize land use and facilitate seamless intermodal transfers, offering commuters smoother travel between bus and metro networks.


Timeline and Funding

According to MMRCL officials, preparatory works will be carried out alongside loan negotiations with JICA. Once funding and environmental clearances are secured, major construction is expected to begin by late 2026 or early 2027.

This collaboration with JICA builds on the successful model of Metro Line 3, which also received Japanese funding and technical support.


Transforming South Mumbai’s Connectivity

Line 11 will drastically reduce surface congestion, improve last-mile connectivity, and enhance access to key heritage, business, and tourism zones across South Mumbai. Once operational, it will serve as a crucial urban transit link, supporting both commuter convenience and sustainable mobility goals for India’s financial capital.
