The outgoing World Boxing (WB) president Boris van der Vorst on Monday said that the new apex body for amateur boxing, which is tasked to conduct the sport in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, is working on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) pilot project to ensure the competition’s integrity.

“The main challenge still is the competition’s integrity. I hope with exploring modern technology we are able to engage, for example AI in bout reviews, so that we restore the trust of fans, boxers, coaches and everyone involved that only the best boxer’s hand is raised,” van der Vorst said on the side-lines of the World Boxing Cup Finals here.

“We are now piloting with AI and providers in getting a bout review and hopefully that will be finished when we are in LA. I cannot promise anything but I can only tell you it’s important that we keep developing as a sport, that’s the only way to show that you’re relevant.”

The WB chief said the qualification process for LA28, which has not been fully finalised, will be a combination of continental qualifiers and world qualifiers.

van der Vorst listed funding and getting several other unaffiliated national and international federations on WB’s side as some major challenges for the global body.

While calling upon boxing stakeholders in India to work together, the WB president expected the country’s boxers to land medals in the 2028 and 2032 Olympics.
