Environmental activist Bharati Chaturvedi, founder of the nonprofit Chintan, on Wednesday revealed a frightening incident involving an Uber ride in Delhi, saying that the city’s women’s helpline did not respond when she called for help.
In a post on X, Chaturvedi alleged that when she tried to stop the driver by opening the cab door, he allegedly grabbed and twisted her arm. She added that she called the women’s helpline, number 100, but received no response.
“Dear women of Delhi I took an @Uber_India from Vasant Vihar to sarvodaya enclave to the doc. The pin stopped near Essex farms, driver agreed to drop me minus pin. But began getting irritated and yelling and suddenly turned while i asked him to go straight for a u turn. Asked him to stop and he refused,” she detailed in her post.

“I opened the cab door to make him stop. He turned around, grabbed my arm and twisted it. Called 100 but no response,” she added.
Chaturvedi also contacted Uber’s safety team, who reportedly asked her to call the police. She expressed frustration at the lack of immediate help and questioned how women could reach authorities in emergencies, noting that the driver did not take payment for the ride.
“Called uber safety and was asked to call 100. Also Sanjana said will involve entire team to assess action. Outrageous. @DelhiPolice how do women contact you when in need? PS- Driver didn’t take payment,” she noted.
The activist also tagged Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Uber’s support team in her post.
Responding, Uber said, “Hey there, this is very concerning. Behaviour like this is absolutely not condoned, and your safety shall always remain a priority. Please share your specific trip with date and time of the trip and registered contact details associated with your Uber account via Direct Message. Our safety team will be in touch with you shortly.”
The post quickly went viral, drawing widespread reactions. Social media users expressed outrage at the lack of response from Delhi Police and criticised Uber’s safety protocols.
A user commented, “Goodness! Terrifying. Are you okay?.” Another suggeted that she “should have punched the driver on his face with the other hand.”
“This is absolutely awful if Delhi wasn’t already so unsafe this makes one shudder. Delhi police has literally vanished off the streets. Giant hug B, can just imagine how shaken you most be,” one wrote.
Another user wrote, “Beyond shocking!!! There should be a panic button that cuts off the engine in the car accessible to the pax. Hope you took pictures of the car and driver. Make that public so others are warned.”
