South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma hailed his team’s 2-0 series triumph over India, adding that it was not something he expected before the start of the tour.
“Coming to India is always a tough prospect. What makes it sweeter is the fact that we have been on the other side of the result, and we know how dark it can be,” Bavuma said on Wednesday.
“I would have never thought 2-0 would be the result at the end of the series. I think it’s an incredible achievement for this group of players. Again, we’ve gone on to etch ourselves in history, and we are creating some memorable moments.”
The 408-run win at the ACA Stadium extended Bavuma’s unbeaten record as the Test captain of the Rainbow Nation (11 wins from 12 games).
The 35-year-old, who led South Africa to the World Test Championship title earlier this year, said he has grown into the role.
“For me, it’s really a process of discovery. I think now I’m probably a lot more assured of myself as a person, as a captain, and of what I’m trying to do out there,” said Bavuma.
“Within the team, we have a lot of leaders. I think it’s about understanding where certain guys provide value within the team and allowing them to flourish in that space.”
In the first Test in Kolkata, it was Bavuma’s vital 55 in the second innings that proved crucial in the 30-run win, and the skipper spoke about compartmentalising his two roles.
“I have learned over the last couple of years to be able to separate the captain and the batter. It’s important that you perform your primary skill as well as you can. I always try to ensure that, from a batting point of view, I’m contributing as much as I can to the team,” said Bavuma.
