The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has unveiled a proposal to develop a ropeway connecting Aarey Station on Metro Line 3 to Film City in Goregaon. This move is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity in one of Mumbai’s busiest yet underserved zones. A possible future extension to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is also under consideration.
At Planning Stage: Budget and Timeline Await Finalisation
As of now, the project is in the early planning phase. An MMRCL official confirmed that no specific budget or timeline has been established. The feasibility study will determine whether the system will use a mono-cable, bi-cable, or tri-cable detachable gondola technology. The corridor is expected to stretch 2–3 km depending on the final alignment.
PPP Model with a Sustainable Focus
The proposed ropeway is envisioned to be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and is likely to follow a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer (DBFOT) framework. Designed with environmental sensitivity in mind, the ropeway will use cable-supported systems, avoiding the need for extensive land acquisition and protecting the region’s green cover.
Solving a Real Urban Mobility Challenge
Film City, located adjacent to SGNP, attracts thousands of workers and tourists daily but suffers from poor public transport connectivity and road congestion. By offering a direct link to the Metro Line 3 at Aarey, the ropeway aims to reduce commute time and road traffic, while supporting Mumbai’s growing urban mobility needs.
A Glimpse into Mumbai’s Transit Future
The Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro (Line 3) is a 33.5-km underground corridor, with one phase already operational. Integrating ropeway transport with this metro network would not only improve access to remote areas but could also set a precedent for similar urban transit projects across India.
If approved, this will be among India’s first ropeways functioning as an urban public transport system connected to a metro line—offering both innovation and sustainability in one package.
