A minor mid-air incident occurred aboard SpiceJet flight SG 1080 from Goa to Pune on Tuesday when a cosmetic interior window frame became dislodged mid-flight. According to the airline, the component involved was a non-structural trim panel used for shading and had no impact on the aircraft’s safety or structural integrity. SpiceJet emphasized that the cabin remained fully pressurized and passenger safety was not at risk at any point during the journey. Upon landing in Pune, the window panel was properly re-secured following standard maintenance procedures.
Passenger Video Sparks Concern Despite Aircraft’s Structural Safety
The affected aircraft, a Q400 turboprop, is equipped with multiple window layers, including a pressure-bearing outer pane that ensures cabin safety even in the event of minor cosmetic displacements. SpiceJet clarified that the incident did not compromise the airworthiness of the aircraft.
However, the situation gained public attention after a passenger, Mandar Sawant, posted a video of the incident on social media platform X, expressing concern about the aircraft’s condition. He noted that the panel popped out roughly 30 minutes after takeoff, startling nearby passengers, including a woman traveling with a baby. Although the outer protective layer of the window remained intact, Sawant described the experience as unsettling.
Crew Response and Safety Reassurance Amid Rising Aviation Concerns
The cabin crew acted quickly, relocating the woman and her child to a different seat and attempting to reattach the loose panel. Sawant mentioned that the stewardess managed to get the frame back in place, but it remained unstable throughout the remainder of the flight.
This incident comes at a time when public concern over aviation safety is heightened, following a recent fatal crash involving Air India in Ahmedabad that resulted in nearly 300 casualties. Amid growing scrutiny, SpiceJet reaffirmed its dedication to the highest safety protocols and reassured passengers that the flight operated within all safety parameters and regulatory standards.
