Exposure to Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics and digital tools is no longer limited to private schools. The Tamil Nadu government has introduced the Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK), a pilot initiative aimed at providing government school students with hands-on training in emerging technologies.
Scope of the Programme
Implemented this academic year for Classes 6 to 9, TN SPARK covers 85 government schools in Coimbatore district alone, including middle, high and higher secondary schools. Dedicated bilingual textbooks in English and Tamil have been prepared, while trained mathematics and science teachers handle the sessions. Each school has allotted one or two periods per week, supported by around 880 hi-tech lab computers.
Curriculum Highlights
The syllabus introduces students to the basics of computer science—algorithms, flowcharts, word processing and data visualisation. Lessons also integrate interactive online tools across subjects like science, geography and languages. AI modules teach creative applications such as text-to-image generation, text-to-speech, doodling, digital art, translation and animation. Coding is taught through beginner-friendly platforms like Scratch, Blockly and Turtle Art, along with basic HTML and cyber safety lessons.
Early Student Response
Teachers report that students are showing high enthusiasm for TN SPARK classes, often preferring them to traditional lessons. The hi-tech labs are being actively used to nurture curiosity, encourage problem-solving and enhance digital literacy. From October, after quarterly exams, the programme will move into full swing.
Preparing Students for the Future
Officials emphasize that the programme is designed not only to give access to advanced technology but also to prepare students for future academic and career opportunities. By introducing AI, robotics and coding at an early age, Tamil Nadu aims to build a generation equipped to keep pace with global digital transformation.
A Model for Other States
TN SPARK sets a strong example for other states by integrating advanced technology into government school curricula. It ensures that students, irrespective of socio-economic background, receive equal exposure to cutting-edge tools that will shape tomorrow’s workforce.
