Amul, India’s largest dairy cooperative, is eyeing Israeli technology to drive the next big leap in dairy productivity. Speaking in Tel Aviv, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said the brand is exploring collaborations with Israeli firms known for their world-leading advancements in dairy science, farm automation, and precision livestock management.
Mehta is part of a 60-member Indian business delegation led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, currently visiting Israel to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Why Israel? A Global Leader in Dairy Productivity
Despite its small size and limited natural resources, Israel consistently ranks among the top nations globally in milk production per cow. This success stems from cutting-edge research in:
- Animal nutrition
- Cattle monitoring and health management
- Productivity enhancement technologies
- Water-efficient farming systems for arid regions
Mehta noted that such innovations are directly relevant to India, the world’s largest milk producer, which is now focusing on improving per-animal yield rather than solely increasing herd size.
“Our focus is to improve the productivity of our cattle,” he said. “Israel has done excellent work in feeding, animal management, and dairy technology—areas where India needs rapid transformation.”
Expanding Amul’s Export Presence in Israel
Amul already exports ghee to Israel, catering mainly to the Indian diaspora. But the cooperative sees strong potential for its wider dairy portfolio.
“We will soon expand to multiple products which can go beyond the diaspora into the mainstream Israeli market,” Mehta told ANI.
This aligns with Amul’s broader strategy of positioning itself as a global dairy brand by tapping high-value international markets.
Strengthening India–Israel Dairy and Agri Partnerships
The GCMMF chief emphasised that Israel’s technology could also help boost agricultural productivity in India’s arid regions, offering solutions suitable for desert-like terrains in states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The visit is part of ongoing discussions between India and Israel to deepen cooperation in agriculture, food security, dairy technology, and trade. With Minister Piyush Goyal leading industry interactions, the delegation aims to create long-term innovation partnerships.

If collaborations materialise, Amul could integrate precision farming tools, smart feeding systems, and advanced cattle-health technologies—potentially revolutionising India’s dairy ecosystem. For a sector that supports millions of farmers, such cooperation could pave the way for higher productivity, better incomes, and stronger global competitiveness
