An atmosphere of anger and despair engulfed a neighbourhood in Jaipur after a 32-year-old man was among the 26 people killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Neeraj Udhwani, worked in the UAE and came to India on a holiday. He was spending his vacation in Pahalgam with his wife, Aayushi Udhwani, when terrorists opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran meadow, which is accessible only by foot and horseback.

He was asked by the terrorists to show his identity card after which he was shot dead. His wife was in the hotel when the attack occurred. Neeraj’s family lives in the Jagatpura area of Jaipur.

After hearing the news, Neeraj’s elder brother and sister-in-law, who are both Income Tax inspectors, left Jaipur to bring his body to Jammu and Kashmir. His body arrived in Jaipur a few hours ago.

At his home in Jaipur, Neeraj’s mother, Jyoti Udhwani, has been inconsolable. His father, Pradeep Udhwani, died a decade ago.

Family members demanded justice for Neeraj. “The perpetrators of the crime should be punished,” said Raju Udhwani, paternal uncle of Neeraj, to India Today TV.

Soon after the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X condemning the Pahalgam attack as heinous and assuring the people that the attackers “will not be spared”.
