Despite managing a hard-fought draw against defending champion Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu coach M. Senthilnathan minced no words while describing the batters’ performance.

“Our batting is not clicking. Scoring against Nagaland is not enough. We were good at 252 for four on day one, and had we got another 100-150, it would have been a different game. The only positive was that we saved the game… other than that, I can’t take any other positives from this,” said Senthilnathan.

The former Tamil Nadu player felt that systemic changes were needed to ensure that the batters were technically equipped to play at this level.

When frontline batters miss straight deliveries and get castled while handling the pacers, exposing their technical inadequacies, it’s time to stem the rot.

“It is a big concern to see batters getting bowled to straight deliveries. They either get across and are trapped leg-before, or to avoid that, they are playing beside the line and getting bowled,” revealed the TN head coach.

“But, at the same time, I won’t fully blame these boys for the way they are playing. In the first division league, they hardly play fast bowlers… when you come to this level, 70% of what they are going to face is seamers.

“Unless we face quality fast bowling back home, we can’t expect them to do too much,” said Senthilnathan.
