Three rounds into the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, Delhi’s Sanat Sangwan has already been involved in two partnerships of 300-plus runs. On Tuesday, Sangwan and fellow opener Arpit Rana forged an unbroken 321-run stand, which is the fourth-highest for the first wicket in the First Class tournament, in the drawn encounter against Pondicherry. In Delhi’s opening game of the campaign against Hyderabad, Sangwan had added 319 runs for the fourth wicket with debutant Ayush Doseja.
“The key to long partnerships is to keep conversing with your batting partner. It is about telling each other what shots you can play. It is about switching on and off. Between overs, we indulge in banter as well. It is important to get out of the zone too. It is about all these things,” Sangwan said on Tuesday.
Although Sangwan and Arpit are relatively new to the Ranji stage, the left-handed pair has batted a lot together at the under-23 level for Delhi. “We have played a lot with each other for the under-23 side. We have a very good understanding,” the 25-year-old added.
Sangwan’s unbeaten 122 in Delhi’s second innings followed a score of 99 in the first dig. Having also racked up a double ton versus Hyderabad, he is on top of the run-scoring list this season with 568 runs. In just his second year of First Class cricket, Sangwan seems to be on the right track.
“Early in an innings, I look to keep it simple. I play deliveries directed at the stumps, and avoid cover drives,” he said.
