In the midst of a lean patch of the sort that Tamil Nadu has had in the Ranji Trophy this season, cobwebs of self-doubt are bound to creep in. Ahead of the Group-A meeting against Uttar Pradesh at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground, TN skipper R. Sai Kishore said his focus in recent days has been on ensuring that his teammates aren’t overly burdened by the run of poor results.

The TN batting unit, in particular, has been under severe scrutiny. In its defeat to Andhra in the previous round, the southern outfit was shot out for below 200 in both innings.

“We have had meetings on what can be done as a batting unit and how to approach different situations, whether to attack or grind it out. When results are not going your way, you don’t enjoy the sport,” Sai Kishore reflected in a chat on Saturday. “The fun element has to be there. That feeling is individualistic. If that is there, the skill set is already there. My discussions have been around how to still enjoy the sport and how to ensure the fun element is intact.”

At this stage, the chances of TN, which hasn’t won any of its four games, qualifying for the quarterfinals appear wafer-thin.

“An outright win will still give us a chance. But we have to play well first. Leave the opponent and points table aside. We have to play to our potential, which sadly hasn’t happened in the last four games. The way we are playing is not up to the mark,” he said.
