How to Use the In-app WhatsApp Message Translation Feature

Over the years, WhatsApp has become the one-stop shop for all your communication needs. Started from just texting over the internet, WhatsApp now lets you place a voice or video call, share status, use AI to generate images, messages, etc. It has grown into becoming a social media app that you just can’t use in a day on your phone. Recently, WhatsApp has also added the in-app WhatsApp message translation feature to make communication much easier.

The feature will facilitate more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries to allow users to express themselves in their own language. You no longer need to use a third-party app to translate the incoming message, which is in a different language. You can use the translation feature and easily communicate in multiple languages. Here’s how you can use it.

How to use the WhatsApp message translation feature?

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Open the chat in which you have received a message in a foreign language.
  3. Long-press that message and tap on the three-dot menu icon at the top-right corner.
  4. Select the Translate option from the menu.
  5. You need to then choose the language in which the message is and the language in which you wish to translate the message. You also have the option to save that setting for future use by toggling on the Translate all new messages in this chat option.

That’s it! The process of using the in-app WhatsApp message translation feature is straightforward. This feature works across personal chats, group chats, and even Channel conversations. The feature is available across both Android and iOS devices, but unfortunately, it isn’t available for web users. If you use WhatsApp on an Android, you also get an additional feature that lets you enable automatic translation for entire chat threads. This means you no longer need to translate each message separately. All future incoming messages will get converted into the target language automatically. The in-app WhatsApp message translation feature is available only in select languages.

For Android users, the translation feature supports only six languages:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Hindi
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Arabic

But for iOS users, the in-app WhatsApp message translation feature supports 19+ languages. They are:

  • Arabic
  • Dutch
  • English (United Kingdom)
  • English (United States)
  • French (France)
  • German (Germany)
  • Hindi
  • Indonesian
  • Italian (Italy)

  • Mandarin Chinese (China mainland)
  • Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan)
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Russian
  • Spanish (Spain)

To accomplish the translation, you will need to download the language pack available. For instance, if you wish to translate a WhatsApp message from Hindi to English, you need to download the language packs for the in-app translation feature to work.
