India’s First Personalized Transfer System for People with Reduced Mobility, ETTravelWorld


In a step towards building a more inclusive travel experience, Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has launched Mobility Assist—India’s first advanced assistive transfer system designed to provide safe and seamless movement for passengers with reduced mobility, including children and those requiring specialised care.

The equipment has been donated by Dr. BSAjaikumar, Founder and Executive Chairman of Healthcare Global Enterprises (HCG), in memory of his son, Adarsh Ajaikumar, who lived with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and used an electric wheelchair. His personal challenges during air travel inspired this initiative, which now ensures greater comfort and dignity for passengers facing similar needs.

Mobility Assist allows mechanical support for boarding, disembarking, and intra-terminal movement directly from a passenger’s wheelchair. It reduces physical strain, minimises risk, and offers a more comfortable experience for both travellers and airport staff. The service will be available on request through Airline Coordination, ensuring personalised, end-to-end assistance.

Dr. Ajaikumar said, “The contribution is deeply personal for us. During our travels, Adarsh endured great discomfort due to the lack of appropriate support equipment. Yet, he chose to turn that pain into purpose. The Mobility Assist represents his wish to help others like him travel with ease and comfort. We hope this becomes a model that airports across India can adopt.”

The airport’s broader accessibility initiatives include the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Programme for passengers with non-visible disabilities and sensory rooms for neurodivergent travellers. BLR Airport is also the first in India to achieve ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Level 3, recognising its commitment to barrier-free travel infrastructure.
