Air India has announced the resumption of its non-stop flights between Delhi and Shanghai (PVG), effective 1 February 2026, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s expanding international network and its return to mainland China after nearly six years.
The launch follows renewed bilateral cooperation between India and China, which recently paved the way for the reinstatement of direct air links suspended since early 2020. The new Delhi–Shanghai service will operate four times weekly using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 18 flat-bed Business Class seats and 238 spacious Economy Class seats, offering travellers a comfortable and seamless long-haul experience.
With this addition, Shanghai becomes Air India’s 48th international destination, reinforcing its position as India’s largest international carrier by passenger traffic. The airline continues to expand its global footprint through the rollout of strategic long-haul routes across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, as part of its ongoing five-year transformation roadmap under the Tata Group.
In parallel, Air India plans to launch non-stop flights between Mumbai and Shanghai later in 2026, subject to necessary regulatory and bilateral approvals. The move aims to enhance connectivity between India’s two key commercial hubs and China’s financial centre, creating new opportunities for business and leisure travel.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Air India, said:
“The resumption of our Delhi–Shanghai services is more than a route launch — it is the restoration of an important bridge between two great, ancient civilisations and modern economic powerhouses. We are delighted to reconnect one of the world’s most vital air corridors, enabling travellers to pursue opportunities in business, trade, healthcare, education, and culture — all with the warmth and hospitality that define Air India.”
The Delhi–Shanghai sector is expected to play a key role in supporting business, academic, and tourism flows between India and China, particularly as travel demand in the Asia-Pacific region continues to recover strongly. The direct route will also facilitate smoother movement for corporate travellers, researchers, and students, while strengthening Air India’s connectivity to one of Asia’s most dynamic aviation markets.
Air India first launched non-stop services to mainland China in October 2000, and the upcoming relaunch underscores its commitment to re-establishing key international routes and restoring global connectivity.
The announcement comes as Air India continues its fleet modernisation and network expansion strategy, which includes the introduction of new aircraft, enhanced inflight products, and expanded partnerships under the Vihaan.AI transformation programme. The airline’s ongoing investments aim to position it as a world-class global carrier offering high service standards and operational excellence.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, deployed on the Delhi–Shanghai route, features advanced cabin pressurisation, higher humidity levels, and noise-reduction technology for enhanced passenger comfort. The aircraft is equipped with Air India’s upgraded inflight entertainment system and a refreshed culinary offering reflecting the airline’s renewed focus on guest experience.
As global aviation rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, Air India’s reinstated connection to China marks another significant step in rebuilding India’s international aviation footprint and strengthening people-to-people and economic ties between the two nations.
