New Delhi: In Hinduism and Jainism, Akshaya Tritiya is an important festival. It is considered to be one of the most auspicious days for new beginnings. This year, Akshaya Tritiya will be celebrated on May 3. Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Akhateej or Akshay Teej.
There is no need to see Panchang for starting any new work on this day.
The word Akshaya means ‘never diminishing’, which means the benefits of good deeds or auspicious things done on this day, such as yajna, japa, daan and punya, would never diminish. According to the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya fast will be on May 3. It is believed that on the day of Akshay Teej, Goddess Lakshmi is kind to all her devotees.
According to a legend, Akshaya Tritiya also commemorates the day the Pandavas while in exile received an Akshaya Patra from Lord Krishna. This ensured an endless supply of food for them. People celebrate this day in the hope that their wealth too will multiply during the year.
Special pujas are done on this day during which yellow clothes and flowers are offered to Ganesha, Lakshmi and Vishnu. A special prasad made of rice, milk and chana dal is also offered.
People also buy gold on this day and the muhurat this time is from 05:18 AM on May 3 to 05:38 AM on May 4, according to panchang. This year, astrologers have said, the occasion will be beneficial for those with the zodiac signs of Sagittarius, Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn.
