Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Blue Line is one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. The 58.19-km stretch will directly connect Central Silk Board Junction with Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Work began almost a decade after initial planning, and completion is expected by December 2027.
Two Phases of Development
The line is being built in two parts:
- Phase 2A: 19.75 km from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapura (K.R. Pura).
- Phase 2B: 38.44 km from K.R. Pura to the airport.
Together, these phases come at a cost of ₹14,788 crore, making it one of the city’s costliest but most crucial Metro projects.
Progress on Track Despite Delays
According to BMRCL, civil works had reached 52.5% completion by June 30, 2025. The project had suffered a nine-month pause in 2023 after a fatal incident at HBR Layout, but construction on the airport section has since regained momentum.
Stations Inside the Airport Campus
The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is constructing two stations within the airport premises. The Airport City Station will be built at ground level, while the Airport Terminal Station will be a semi-underground facility, 7–8 metres below the surface.
Passenger-Friendly Features
The Blue Line will feature driverless trains equipped with luggage racks and advanced safety systems, designed specifically to meet the needs of air travellers. This makes it the first Metro corridor in Bengaluru with airport-focused passenger facilities.
Inspection and Quality Review
BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar recently inspected the corridor between KIA and Hebbal. His review covered viaduct construction, station works, and the Shettigere depot. He also assessed complex structures near IAF land, emphasising timely delivery and adherence to safety standards.
Boost to City Connectivity
Once operational, the Blue Line will significantly ease airport travel for commuters from Bengaluru’s southern, eastern, and northern suburbs. By linking multiple corridors, it is set to become one of the most vital routes in the city’s expanding Metro network.
