Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation today at 5 PM. The timing has sparked speculation, as it comes a day before the rollout of GST 2.0 reforms, suggesting the Prime Minister may touch upon the new tax measures. Details of the address have not been officially disclosed.
The Prime Minister last addressed the nation on May 12, 2025, when he spoke about Operation Sindoor, India’s counterstrike following the terror attack in Pahalgam.
Before that, he had made a series of nationally televised announcements during the Covid-19 crisis, with the first on March 24, 2020, declaring a three-week nationwide lockdown, then on April 14, 2020, extending it and later in May outlining steps to ease restrictions.
On March 12, 2019, he went live to announce the Balakot airstrikes, carried out in retaliation to the Pulwama terror attack.
One of the most consequential addresses came on November 8, 2016, when the Prime Minister announced the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
Since assuming office in 2014, these have been among the Prime Minister’s most closely watched moments of communication with the country, often tied to major policy decisions or national security actions.
