Debasis Sahoo played increasingly better as the match progressed to beat fifth seed Parth Aggarwal in the men’s first round of the Fenesta National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex on Monday.
It was a remarkable turnaround as Debasis, who trains with coach Todd Clark at the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, recovered from being down 2-5 in the opening set to race away with the match.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Debasis will challenge former national champion Manish Sureshkumar who eased past Amrutjay Mohanty for the loss of four games.
Atharva Sharma fought his way past former finalist Suraj Prabodh in the third set tie-break.
In the women’s section, top seed Vaishnavi Adkar warmed up for the tougher matches ahead with a straight-set victory over Mirudhula Palanivel.
Jeetesh Kumari stayed strong after losing the first set to quell the challenge from Chevika Reddy who retired midway through the decider.
Left-hander Aditi Rawat had to play at her best to get past Chandana Potugari in three sets.
