Pune Metro Will Launch Driverless Metro Trains Under Phase 2 – Trak.in


The Pune Metro is preparing to introduce driverless train operations in its upcoming Phase Two, beginning with the proposed route from Khadakwasla to Kharadi under Metro Line 4, a greenfield project. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the initial plan was for Attended Train Operation (ATO) mode, where a train operator supervises automation through the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. However, with rising ridership demand, Maha-Metro has decided to implement Unattended Train Operation (UTO), or driverless trains, for Line 4 and future projects.

Advancing Pune Metro with Driverless Technology and Smart Infrastructure

Driverless technology is already being introduced in other major Indian metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Officials say UTO will reduce human error, improve punctuality, enhance passenger experience, and increase reliability. Importantly, driverless trains also eliminate the driver’s cabin, creating more space for passengers. While Phase One routes (Line 1: PCMC–Swargate and Line 2: Vanaz–Ramwadi) will continue with drivers initially, they are expected to transition to UTO after technological upgrades.

The consultant for Line 4 will prepare detailed cost estimates and planning for rolling stock, signalling, telecom systems, and safety infrastructure fully compliant with Metro Rail Policy 2020. Pune Metro will procure 75 metro coaches (25 three-car trains) compatible with driverless technology, along with advanced systems like CBTC signalling, passenger information displays, CCTV surveillance, cybersecurity measures, and fibre optic networks.

Pune Metro Line 4: Expanding Routes with Driverless Future

Line 4 spans 31.6 km with 28 stations, including a 6.1 km spur from Manik Baug to Nal Stop. The corridor will pass through Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Swargate, Hingne Chowk, Warje, and Khadakwasla, covering key old Pune areas. It will also offer interchanges with Line 2 at Nal Stop and Kharadi. Train services will be divided into two routes: Route 1 from Khadakwasla to Kharadi (60% of services) and Route 2 from Nal Stop to Hadapsar (40% of services).

The adoption of driverless technology marks a significant leap for Pune Metro, aligning it with global standards. Officials emphasize that UTO systems are more efficient and reliable than humans, making them the future of urban metro transport.
