Qualifier Divya Bhardwaj knocked out third seed Pooja Ingale 6-3, 6-4 in the women’s first round of the Fenesta National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex on Tuesday.

It was a commendable effort from Divya, as she stroked fluently on both flanks, capitalising on the rhythm that she had gained while negotiating the qualifying matches.

After competing in two ITF events in different conditions over the last fortnight, Pooja could not find her best game. Divya will next play the winner of the match between qualifier Jennifer Luikham and Amodini Naik.

Second seed Akanksha Nitture breezed past Paavanii Paathak without dropping a game.

Qualifier Aakruti Sonkusare stroked with craft to get past Prathyusha Rachapudi.

The Chairman and Managing Director of DCM Shriram Group, Ajay Shriram expressed happiness about hosting the best tournament in the country, which was helping players find their path to excellence at the national and international levels.

The results: Women (first round): Aakruti Sonkusare bt Prathyusha Rachapudi 6-1, 6-3; Yubrani Banerjee bt Nemha Sarah Kispotta 6-2, 6-3; Sonal Patil bt Diva Bhatia 6-2, 6-2; Divya Bhardwaj bt Pooja Ingale 6-3, 6-4; Akanksha Nitture bt Paavanii Paathak 6-0, 6-0.
