Koldo Obieta scored a late winner as Kerala Blasters (KBFC) started its AIFF Super Cup campaign on a high with a 1-0 win over a 10-man Rajasthan United FC in their Group D match at the GMC Stadium here on Thursday.

KBFC tried to find an opening through set pieces and almost got one in the 22nd minute when Danish Farooq headed Adrian Luna’s corner kick against the outside of the woodwork.

Eight minutes later, from another corner, Muhammed Saheef’s header was cleared by Gursimrat Singh Gill just in front of Rajasthan’s goal-line.

But after the restart, another Gursimrat intervention proved costly. The defender pulled down Nihal Sudheesh, who was running through on goal after a pass from Obieta, earning a straight red card.

As the clock ticked past the 80th minute mark, Rajathan looked to see the match out with a point.

Just then, the combination of Juan Rodriguez and Obieta found the breakthrough. The defender set up Obieta, who headed the ball past a diving Bhabindra Malla, scoring his first goal for the club.

The win took Blasters to second in Group D, with Mumbai City FC, level on points with KBFC, topping the table on goal difference.

KBFC plays bottom-placed Sporting Club Delhi next, while Rajasthan locks horns with the Islanders, with both matches on November 3.

Later, youth — Taorem Kelvin Singh (19) and experience — Sunil Chhetri (41) — both bore fruit for Bengaluru FC as it beat Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 in their Group C match at the PJN Stadium in Margao.

Kelvin steered Braian Sanchez’s pass into the net with a right-footed curler while Chhetri converted from the spot after he was brought down by Pukrambam Meitei in the 85th minute.

Mohammedan Sporting faces Punjab FC next in Bambolim, while Bengaluru plays Gokulam Kerala in Margao, with both matches scheduled on November 2.

The results: Rajasthan United 0 lost to Kerala Blasters (Obieta 87), Bengaluru FC 2 (Kelvin 34, Chhetri 86) bt Mohammedan Sporting 0.
