Anish Bhanwala added a silver to India’s tally, finishing second in the 25m rapid fire pistol with a total of 28/40 for his maiden individual competition medal at the 2025 ISSF World Championships in Cairo on Sunday.
The 23-year old Anish had to fight off four shoot-offs – twice each against Germany’s Emauel Mueller for 3-4 position and Maksym Horodynets of Ukraine for the silver – to finish behind Frenchman Clement Bessaguet (31/40). This was also the first pistol event of the competition. With Bessaguet on 29 points and Anish on 25 after the seventh series, the gold was out of reach even before the last five shots were taken.
Anish, who qualified for the final in second place, started well, being on target for all five shots in his first series but then had to fight to stay in the competition but managed to hold his nerves for his first World Championships individual medal to go with his mixed team silver from the 2022 edition.
Anish, Adarsh Singh and Sameer finished fifth in the team event with a total of 1731 in the qualification rounds. In the morning, Elavenil Valarivan and Arjun Babuta finished fifth in the 10m air rifle mixed team event with a 632.3 score.
