Karnataka leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal has had an impressive Ranji Trophy campaign so far, making decisive contributions with both ball and bat.
Talking about his pre-season bowling preparation here on Tuesday, he said: “I think I bowled almost 1400 overs coming in from Thimmappaiah (red-ball tournament) all the way until the end of IPL.
“So, if you really look at it, you would probably come up to me and say, ‘You’ve overbowled.’ But I always believe that as a wrist-spinner, since the art is a lot harder and a lot more complicated, you need volumes.
“It’s something that I’ve always believed for a very long time now. When you’ve already loaded up pre-season, your instincts and muscle memory take over.
“And I’ve been working a lot on the angles that I bowl, especially to the right-hand batters — bowling from closer to the crease, from a wider angle at the crease, and using the depth of the crease.
“I think those are the smaller things that I started using in the last four or five years, and I think I’ve kind of understood it a lot more over the last three years. Other than that, you will take a little time as a spinner to mature, and probably at 32, you understand (your craft better).”
Saying that he “backs his defence” and knows how to get himself “out of a spot of bother” as a batter, he added that he’s “working on” converting his fifties into hundreds.
