K.L. Rahul will lead India in the three-match One-Day International series against South Africa starting on November 30.

Rahul will substitute for regular skipper Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck spasm in the first Test against the Proteas in Kolkata and is currently out of action. Rishabh Pant, who is leading India in the ongoing second Test in Guwahati, will be Rahul’s deputy. The wicket-keeper last played an ODI for India in Sri Lanka last year.

Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested, while Ravindra Jadeja has been recalled ahead of Axar Patel, who played in the three-match series in Australia last month. The other new addition is Tilak Varma, seen as a possible replacement in the middle-order for the injured Shreyas Iyer.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have also been recalled to the ODI set-up, with one of them set to partner Rohit Sharma at the top. Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana will form the pace attack, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy also in the mix. India’s previous ODI series was a 1-2 defeat in Australia last month.

The squad: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, K.L. Rahul (capt. & w-k), Rishabh Pant (w-k), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Dhruv Jurel.

The schedule: November 30, Ranchi; December 3, Raipur; December 6, Visakhapatnam.
