As IPL 2025 approaches the halfway stage, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s inability to repeat its 2024 heroics has been among the biggest talking points so far. One of the major reasons for Sunrisers languishing in ninth place in the 10-team tournament is their inability to win away from home.
In fact, Sunrisers remain the only team to have failed to win away from home. Head coach Daniel Vettori admitted that they have been unable to adapt to different conditions. “There has to be more to it from our side that we have to adapt. We know that conditions like this exist in Chennai, sometimes (in) Ahmedabad. We are not expecting to go over around the country and come up on belters, so the ball is in our court to realise that,” Vettori said after the four-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night.
The tacky track where the ball stuck into the surface was in stark contrast to the usual belter at Wankhede. Add to it the prowess of the MI pacers in varying the speed without missing the length. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult lead from the front and Sunrisers’ power-packed batting line-up could hardly break the shackles.
Should Vettori expect such slow surfaces that restricts Sunrisers’ big-hitters? “No one really has control over their surface, so there is a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don’t suit us,” he said.
