The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has rolled out a WhatsApp-based ticketing system for commuters of Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Aqua Line. The line stretches from Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai to Aarey JVLR in the north-western part of the city. The new system allows passengers to generate QR tickets instantly without needing a separate mobile application.

How the System Works
To use the service, commuters can simply send “Hi” to +91 98730 16836 or scan QR codes displayed at metro stations. The platform allows users to create up to six QR tickets in a single transaction and supports multiple payment options, including UPI, debit, and credit cards. Payments made via UPI come with no additional charges, while card transactions incur minimal fees. By eliminating paper tickets, the initiative promotes eco-friendly and sustainable travel.

Speaking about the launch, MMRC Managing Director Ashwini Bhide highlighted that the system is part of MMRC’s broader commitment to delivering efficient, seamless, and sustainable commuting experiences for Mumbai residents. Powered by PeLocal Fintech Pvt Ltd, the WhatsApp ticketing system ensures passengers can book tickets quickly and conveniently without installing extra apps.

Integration with Mumbai One App
The introduction of WhatsApp ticketing complements recent advancements in the city’s transport infrastructure. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mumbai One mobile app, which allows integrated ticketing across metros, public buses, and suburban railways. He also inaugurated the final phase of the 33.5-kilometre Metro Line 3, enhancing connectivity across the metropolis.

Existing Implementations and Future Prospects
WhatsApp-based ticketing is already operational on Mumbai Metro Line 2A and Line 7, as well as on the Delhi Metro network, demonstrating its growing adoption across India. With this technology, MMRC is making urban commuting faster, smarter, and greener, paving the way for a modernized, paperless public transport system.
