In a major development for rail travelers, Indian Railways is set to operationalize the new Deoband–Roorkee rail line, enhancing connectivity between Delhi and Dehradun. The route will offer a direct and shorter link, reducing the distance by nearly 40 km and cutting travel time by 45 to 50 minutes.

CRS Approval and Successful Trial Run
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has approved the new section for operations. A trial run was conducted at a speed of 122 kmph, confirming the route’s readiness. Passenger services on this section are expected to commence soon.
Impact on Delhi–Dehradun Vande Bharat
The Delhi (ANVT)–Dehradun Vande Bharat Express, the fastest train on this route, currently takes 4 hours 45 minutes to cover 302 km. With the new rail line, the travel time is expected to come down significantly, offering a faster and more efficient option for passengers.
Deoband–Roorkee Rail Project Details
This 29.55 km line was sanctioned in 2007–08 at an estimated cost of Rs 791 crore. The Government of Uttarakhand has borne 50 percent of the project cost. The new route bypasses Saharanpur, providing a more direct path to Delhi from Roorkee and Dehradun.
Boost to Regional Growth
Apart from easing travel, the new line will benefit towns and villages such as Jabarhera, Manglaur, Libarheri, and Narsen. It is expected to open new opportunities in tourism, trade, and local employment, giving a push to regional development in both Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh.
