In a bold move to modernise urban transport and promote green mobility, the Maharashtra government has approved e-bike taxi services across the state. But the announcement has sparked strong opposition from auto-rickshaw unions, who fear the decision may jeopardise the livelihoods of over 15 lakh rickshaw drivers.
What’s in the E-Bike Taxi Plan?
The recently cleared proposal includes:
- 15-kilometre maximum ride limit
- Mandatory helmet use for riders and pillion passengers
- Estimated 20,000 new job opportunities in the e-mobility sector
Officials say the decision is aimed at offering commuters a faster, eco-friendly option for short-distance travel, especially in traffic-heavy cities like Mumbai and Pune.
Auto Rickshaw Union Calls Move “Unfair, Dangerous”
The Auto Rickshaw-Taximen’s Union in Mumbai staged a protest at the Andheri RTO shortly after the cabinet’s announcement. Union leader Shashank Rao criticised the state for bypassing consultation with existing public transport associations.
“We were not even consulted. E-bike taxis directly threaten the survival of rickshaw drivers and their families,” said Rao.
The union argues that:
- Rickshaw drivers are already struggling post-COVID due to financial burdens and the impact of metro line expansions.
- E-bike taxis will undercut fares, drawing away short-distance passengers.
- Safety and accountability in private bike taxis is a major concern.
Statewide Protests & Warning of Escalation
Autorickshaw unions across multiple districts protested outside Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to oppose the policy.
Auto drivers interviewed by India Today echoed concerns:
- “There’s no sense of security in a private bike ride.”
- “Metro lines have reduced our earnings. Now e-bikes will finish us off.”
The union has warned of more aggressive protests if the government does not respond to their demands and revisit the decision.
What Lies Ahead?
While the e-bike taxi policy promises green jobs and urban mobility upgrades, it faces significant resistance from those whose livelihoods are at stake.
Whether the Maharashtra government can strike a balance between innovation and inclusion will determine how successfully this new ride-sharing model rolls out on the streets.
