Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Railway Minister V Somanna confirmed that survey work for the Bengaluru Circular Railway project has been completed. The project aims to connect the outskirts of Bengaluru city and establish four new railway terminals, including one near Kempegowda International Airport.
Focus on Expanding Bengaluru’s Railway Infrastructure
Somanna highlighted the need for robust railway infrastructure in Bengaluru due to the city’s fast-growing population. He stressed that after taking charge as Railway Minister, his focus has been on completing old and stalled railway projects.
He praised the cooperation of Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M B Patil, in advancing the suburban railway project.
Increased Railway Funding for Karnataka
Previously, the Union government allocated only ₹833 crore annually to Karnataka for railway projects. However, Somanna noted that the funding has now been significantly increased to ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 crores every year.
With this enhanced budget, all pending railway projects in Karnataka are expected to be completed within two to three years. Somanna urged the State government to fully cooperate in speeding up project implementation, stating that it would significantly contribute to Karnataka’s development.
Talks on Reinstating Ticket Concessions
Addressing a question regarding the reinstatement of railway ticket concessions for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, Somanna said a formal request has been submitted to the railway department.
He explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union government had reduced overall railway ticket prices by 46 percent, leading to the withdrawal of earlier concessions. In light of public demand, Somanna assured that he would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister to work towards reinstating these benefits.
