Alia Bhatt has joined the list of stars celebrating Diljit Dosanjh’s big achievement at the International Emmy Awards. The singer-actor has received a nomination for Best Actor for his role in Amar Singh Chamkila, while the film itself has been nominated in the Best TV/Mini-Series category.
On Sunday, Alia took to Instagram Stories to share her excitement. Re-posting a congratulatory note from her own production house, Eternal Sunshine Productions, the actress wrote, “Congrats @diljitdosanjh and the team behind this gem! Shining bright indeed!.” The original post applauded the film’s storytelling, describing it as “storytelling at its finest” and sent warm wishes to the entire team.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Amar Singh Chamkila stars Diljit as Punjab’s iconic folk singer, while Parineeti Chopra plays his wife and singing partner, Amarjot Kaur. The biographical drama was released on Netflix in April 2024 and quickly became a fan favourite for its raw performances and soulful music.
Talking earlier about casting Diljit, Imtiaz Ali admitted he had initial doubts about whether the actor could transform into Chamkila because of his trademark long hair, while the role demanded a different look. But after the film’s release, the director said he was convinced no one could have done justice to the part better than Diljit.
The International Emmy nomination adds to the film’s global recognition. Diljit will now compete in the Best Actor category against David Mitchell (Ludwig), Oriol Pla (Yo, Adicto / I, Addict), and Diego Vasquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude).
Amar Singh Chamkila tells the story of the singer often called the “Elvis of Punjab.” Known for his bold lyrics and high-energy performances in the 1980s, Chamkila became a legend of Punjabi music before his life was tragically cut short. He and Amarjot were killed in 1988 at the age of 27, leaving behind a legacy that still inspires.
