In a tragic incident, at least 19 people–10 women, eight men, and a three-month-old infant– lost their lives after a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) bus, carrying 72 passengers, collided with a truck in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district on Monday.

The accident took place on the Hyderabad-Bijapur Highway when a tipper truck, reportedly coming from the wrong side, rammed into the RTC bus.

About 16 people among those who died were natives of Tandur, a small town in Telangana’s Vikarabad district, about 50 km from Hyderabad.

Among them is Yellaiah Goud, a driver who has lost three daughters, all college students in Hyderabad — Anusha, Sai Priya and Nandini.

“I had asked them not to come. Their mother asked them to come. Last night, they wanted to return. We asked them not to go on a Sunday and leave early on Monday morning. I have lost three daughters. I don’t know how I will survive this,” he said while consoling his wife, Ambika, cried her eyes out in front of a large crowd that had gathered in front of the Government Hospital in Chevella, Indian Express reported.

As per the report, the eldest daughter, Anusha, got married last month. Over the weekend, the girls, who were studying in Hyderabad, had come to attend a wedding in Tandur.

“They were returning to Hyderabad colleges to attend their classes when the bus accident took place. The eldest daughter, Anusha, got married last month. The family was in high spirits when this happened,” Narasimha, a relative of the bereaved couple told the news outlet.

The loss of the Goud family and the collective sorrow that swept through Tandur highlighted the devastating human cost of this highway collision.

Another heart-wrenching ordeal is of the family of 33-year-old Saliha Begum and her three-month-old baby boy, who were among those who died in the accident. She was traveling to Hyderabad to visit her paternal grandparents with her child, which became her last journey.

The mother was found clutching her child when rescue workers cleared the debris and gravel from the site.

Another victim, N Hanumanthu, whose life revolved around his work and family, had missed an earlier train to Hyderabad and chose the bus. He left behind a 10-year-old son, Vivek, who wept inconsolably at the accident site. “Within minutes, I could not see my father,” Vivek said as quoted by the news outlet.

The truck carrying the gravel was allegedly speeding at the time. The gravel fell on the passengers, who were buried alive. The bodies were recovered after an earth mover was called in to remove parts of the mangled bus.
