Air India Crash: Health officials on Sunday confirmed that DNA samples taken from relatives of the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash have successfully matched with 80 of the recovered bodies. Out of these, 33 bodies have already been returned to their respective families.

While four bodies were released yesterday, another 29 were handed over today as the identification process continues amid a challenging situation.

Officials said that as soon as DNA reports confirm a match, families are being notified and the remains are released to them.

Health officials added that ambulances with police escort vehicles are being arranged for safe transportation of the bodies to their homes, in an effort to support the bereaved families.

Along with the bodies, families are being provided with essential documents, including death certificates and DNA reports, to ensure a smooth and respectful handover process.

Vijay Rupani’s Last Rites Tomorrow

The state authorities confirmed that the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those who lost their lives in the crash, will be conducted with full state honours tomorrow, June 16.

“CM Bhupendra Patel informed Vijay Rupani’s family about the DNA samples matching as soon as the information was received… Tomorrow, at 11.30 am, the family will receive Vijay Rupani’s mortal remains from the Civil Hospital. The mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2. The funeral will be carried out at 5 pm and the last rites will be completed at 6 pm with state honours,” said Gujarat health minister Rushikesh Patel.

The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, crashed into a doctor’s hostel shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12.
