The Delhi airport earlier said heavy rain may impact flight operations and urged passengers to get in touch with their respective airlines for updated flight information.
While Air India and SpiceJet said their flights may get impacted, IndiGo said their flights were getting affected due to the heavy rains and thunderstorm sweeping across Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata.
The sudden weather shift in Delhi brought strong winds, loose dust clouds, and isolated spells of rain in several parts of the capital.
In the three hours between 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm, Safdarjung recorded 12.2 mm of rainfall. Other stations also reported showers, Mayur Vihar recorded 13 mm, and Pitampura reported 5 mm of rainfall.
In Delhi, the windspeed was recorded at 79 kmph. Due to the sudden change of weather, the city saw a massive drop in temperatures — from 37 degrees Celsius to 23 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the Delhi-Srinagar IndiGo flight witnessed massive turbulence and difficulty making a landing due to bad weather.
The aircraft’s nose cone got damaged while attempting to land in Srinagar. However, all passengers and crew members were evacuated safely upon landing.
