There were some spells of rain and lots of drama at the Wankhede Stadium.
In the early hours of Wednesday (May 6, 2025), Gujarat Titans held its nerve and pulled off a three-wicket win against Mumbai Indians.
Pursuing a target of 156, GT’s innings was interrupted by two rain breaks, and it required 15 runs off the final over.
But Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee set the tone with a boundary and a six off Deepak Chahar before a calm Arshad Khan took a single off the final delivery to guide the team home.
Despite a fiery spell by Jasprit Bumrah, GT left the iconic venue with a smile. Bumrah bowled 11 dot balls in his first three overs and removed GT captain Shubman Gill and Shahrukh Khan in quick succession to shift the momentum.
But there were a lot of ebbs and flows in the game.
GT looked firmly in control until the 14th over, with 49 runs needed off 36 balls.
While Gill held fort, Sherfane Rutherford brought up 28 in two overs before rain halted proceedings. However, with Bumrah cleaning up Gill, and Trent Boult dismissing Rutherford, things went downhill for GT. Bumrah returned to remove Shahrukh.
From cruising comfortably, with Gill and Jos Buttler adding 72 runs for the second wicket, GT stuttered before Tewatia and Coetzee turned the tide in the final over.
Opting to bowl, it was a rare sloppy fielding show by GT as it dropped as many as three catches in the PowerPlay. And, making the most of the opportunities, Will Jacks (53, 35b) brought up his first fifty of the season before the visitor pulled things back to restrict MI to 155 for eight.
Titans got the early momentum after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Ryan Rickelton off the second delivery before the side was left frustrated with dropped catches.
Jacks partnered with Suryakumar Yadav to forge a 71-run stand for the third wicket.
But as GT bowlers bounced back, MI was reeling at 123 for seven, after cruising at 97 for two at one stage. Had Corbin Bosch not hit a couple of sixes in Prasidh Krishna’s final over, MI wouldn’t have been able to breach the 150-mark. All this proved immaterial in the end.
