Henry Thornton does not have express pace, but his skiddy round-arm action was enough to rattle India-A.
At the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, the seamer claimed four wickets to put Australia-A in command on day two of the second ‘Test’.
After posting 420 in the first innings, the visitor bowled out the host for 194 to secure a 226-run lead. India-A then struck back late to leave Australia-A at 16 for three.
Gurnoor Brar removed Sam Konstas with his first delivery, Mohammed Siraj had Campbell Kellaway caught behind, and Manav Suthar dismissed Oliver Peake at leg-slip.
Yet, the day belonged to Thornton.
Introduced in the 10th over, the 28-year-old dismissed N. Jagadeesan, who pulled a short ball to mid-wicket. In the next over, Devdutt Padikkal edged to mid-off while Dhruv Jurel was hurried into an lbw.
Thornton returned later to test Prasidh Krishna with short balls. One was pulled for six, but another struck the batter on the helmet, forcing him to retire hurt.
Concussion substitute
Yash Thakur came in as the concussion substitute, and soon Siraj gloved a bouncer to the ’keeper to hand Thornton his fourth.
For India-A, Sai Sudharsan’s 75 off 140 balls was the lone highlight. Coming in after K.L. Rahul edged behind off Will Sutherland, the left-hander showed composure, driving confidently and countering the short ball with an upper cut for six. He stitched a 51-run stand with Ayush Badoni, who was eventually stumped. Todd Murphy trapped Sai Sudharsan leg before to end the resistance. India-A’s innings ended tamely with a run-out mix-up between Gurnoor and Yash Thakur.
Earlier, Murphy and Thornton had added 91 for the last wicket, with the former’s enterprising 76 frustrating the host. Thornton stayed unbeaten on 32 before turning tormentor with the ball.
