India’s perfect record in this year’s Asia Cup was preserved by its dramatic victory in the Super Over against Sri Lanka in the final game of the Super Four phase on Friday.
It provided a few areas, however, for Suryakumar Yadav’s men to ponder over in the tune-up to the defence of the T20 World Cup in February and March next year.
Ahead of the final against Pakistan on Sunday, India bowling coach Morne Morkel acknowledged that the team is yet to tick all boxes in this campaign.
“I don’t think we’ve played the complete game in this tournament so far. After every match, there have been discussions on areas we would like to improve and get better at,” Morkel told reporters on Friday night.
“In all departments, work needs to be done. We’re by no means the finished article and we know that.”
At the halfway stage of Friday’s game, India’s total of 202 for five seemed set to facilitate a convincing win. But in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah — he was rested for the inconsequential contest — the bowlers were challenged by Pathum Nissanka’s onslaught.
“The more we can find ourselves in sticky situations and execute well and take the learning from that, that’s how this group is going to grow,” Morkel reflected. “So, yes, sometimes it is frustrating from the side if we don’t get it all together, but there’s a bigger picture in mind.”
With just a day’s break before the final, Morkel underlined the importance of the bowlers receiving sufficient rest.
“The best way to recover is to sleep and stay off your feet. It is about getting massages and getting mentally ready for a big battle on Sunday. It’s a quick turnaround. So, playing this smart is going to be key,” he said.
