A day after his namesake won the Asia Cup in cricket for India, Rinku Singh went one further, setting a new championship record en route being crowned the world champion at the World Para Athletics Championships in front of a small but vocal crowd of supporters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday.
Rinku, who finished second in the last two editions, was third time lucky, registering an impressive 66.37m in the javelin throw F46 category, almost two metres ahead of compatriot and two-time former champion Sundar Singh Gurjar (64.36m). World record holder Gurjar edged ahead of Cuba’s Guillermo Gonzalez in his penultimate throw while twice medallist Ajeet Singh narrowly missed the podiumand a chance to make it a clean sweep for India, finishing fourth with a season’s best of 61.77m.
In fact, every one of the 11 contestants managed either a season’s or personal best, making it one of the most impressive events on the tournament here so far and the most productive for India. Mahendra Gurjar, however, disappointed in the T63 long jump, finishing last with three fouls and no mark against his name.
Australian James Turner extended his domination in the 400m T36 category, the world record holder winning his fifth medal and fourth gold in 52.18 seconds. Denis Gnezdilov, competing here as a Neutral Para Athlete because of Russia’s ban, set a new world record in the shot put F40 with a throw of 11.92m pushing the reigning champion Miguel Montiero to second spoteven as India’s Ravi Rongali finished sixth with a season’s best of 10.10m. Among the women, world record holder Faustyna Kotlowska of Poland easily won the discus throw F64 in 38.96meven as India’s Dayawanti fought hard for a fourth-place finish with 27.94m, a new Asian record.
