Equine illness halts Hyderabad races

The Hyderabad Race Club (HRC) had cancelled the final two race days of the Hyderabad Monsoon Races, scheduled for October 27 and 31, following an alarming outbreak of respiratory infections of unknown origin among a few horses stabled at the Hyderabad Race Club (HRC).

The decision comes in the wake of a precautionary advisory issued by the Veterinary Commission of the Turf Authorities of India (TAI), aimed at safeguarding equine health and preventing potential spread to other racing centres.

Key Directives Issued by the TAI Veterinary Commission

Restriction on horse movement: Horses currently stationed at the HRC will not be permitted to move to any other racing centre or stud farm until further notice. Similarly, no horses will be allowed to enter the HRC premises from other centres.

Jockey participation limited: ‘A’ licensed jockeys from other racing centres have been advised not to ride in Hyderabad, either in races or during track work. Hyderabad-based jockeys are also restricted from riding at other race clubs unless strict quarantine regulations are followed.

Trainer and stable staff restrictions: Trainers and their staff associated with HRC are barred from entering the premises of any other race club until further clarification is issued.

Biosecurity measures: All trainers have been instructed to adhere rigorously to hygiene and biosecurity protocols to mitigate any risk of further transmission.

Random diagnostic testing ordered: As a precaution, the Board has also resolved to conduct random diagnostic tests on horses under each trainer at HRC to determine the nature and extent of the infection.

The Hyderabad Race Club is expected to issue further updates once laboratory findings are available and the Veterinary Commission provides clearance for the resumption of equine movement and racing activities.
