IndiGo has signed a contract with Airbus confirming the conversion of 30 out of its 70 purchase rights for the Airbus A350-900 aircraft into firm orders. With this agreement, the airline doubles its widebody commitment from 30 to 60 aircraft. The announcement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the IATA Annual General Meeting held in New Delhi in June 2025.
IndiGo’s initial order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft was placed in April 2024, marking the airline’s first foray into widebody operations. Of the 70 purchase rights retained at the time, 30 have now been exercised, leaving the carrier with options for 40 more widebody aircraft to support its long-term expansion.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, said, “Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers. The conversion of this MoU into a firm order for 30 additional A350-900s is a testament to our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and our strategic partnership with Airbus, further reinforced by the strong start of our long-haul operations.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, added, “The A350’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, range and passenger comfort perfectly align with IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and international long-haul network ambitions. This milestone reinforces our strong partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world.”
The A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engines, known for fuel efficiency and reliability. This combination is expected to enhance IndiGo’s operational flexibility as it enters the next phase of international growth.
IndiGo has been expanding its global footprint with new direct connections to Manchester and Amsterdam, and upcoming routes to Copenhagen, London and Athens. The arrival of the A350 fleet will further enable the carrier to open long-haul routes to the Americas and beyond.
With a fleet of over 400 aircraft and an order book exceeding 900 units—including A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR models—IndiGo continues to align its expansion with India’s growing aviation ambitions and the government’s vision of developing the country into a global aviation hub.
