Etihad Airways has launched its new A321LR aircraft on the Abu Dhabi–Kolkata route, bringing its latest premium product to the Indian market. The inaugural flight, EY222, landed at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport on 24 September at 8.35pm, with all cabins sold out.
All eight weekly return services between Abu Dhabi and Kolkata will now be operated by the A321LR, which features two enclosed First Suites, 14 lie-flat Business seats, and 144 ergonomically designed Economy seats. Each cabin is equipped with 4K touchscreens, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, and high-speed Wi-Fi.
The aircraft is part of Etihad’s fleet modernisation plan, with 30 A321LRs scheduled for delivery. Two have already joined the airline’s network this year. The model is intended to deliver premium comfort on short- and medium-haul routes, complementing Etihad’s widebody operations.
Etihad carried more than 135,000 passengers annually between Kolkata and Abu Dhabi, with the route serving both leisure and corporate demand. The service also connects travellers conveniently to Europe, Africa, and North America. The carrier currently operates 183 flights per week to 11 Indian cities.
Commenting on the launch, Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Etihad Airways, said: “India is an important market for Etihad and we’re incredibly proud to be in Kolkata to welcome our newest aircraft, the A321LR, on its inaugural flight to India. Whether choosing our luxurious First Suites, lie-flat Business seats with direct aisle access and a window-view, or our next-generation Economy cabin, our guests will enjoy a superior flying experience in Etihad’s signature style.”
Kolkata, recognised as India’s cultural capital, continues to attract international visitors while also generating demand from corporate travellers, students, and those visiting friends and family. The new A321LR product is expected to further strengthen Etihad’s position on the route by combining innovation, design, and service enhancements.
