IATO’s 43rd AGM in New Delhi centres on tourism revival, policy reforms, and digital growth, ETTravelWorld


The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) held its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at The Claridges, New Delhi, marking over four decades of service to India’s inbound tourism sector. The annual event drew participation from leading tour operators, policymakers, and government representatives to deliberate on key policy matters, market recovery, and the digital transformation of the travel trade.

In his Welcome Address, Ravi Gosain, President of IATO, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening India’s global tourism position through unified policy advocacy and strategic engagement with government bodies. He underscored IATO’s progress on critical issues, including GST rationalisation, the reopening of the China market, and the adoption of technology-driven initiatives to support members. “IATO’s strength lies in its unity, credibility, and persistent advocacy,” said Gosain. “We remain committed to ensuring our members’ concerns stay at the forefront of national tourism policy discussions.”

Gosain highlighted IATO’s sustained efforts that led to amendments by the GST Council, reducing the hotel GST rate below INR 7,500 from 12 per cent to 5 per cent , while maintaining the 5 per cent rate on tour operator services. He reiterated IATO’s continued advocacy for the Export Industry Status for forex-earning tour operators, uniform 5 per cent GST on passenger transport and restaurant services, and recognition of tourism as a core service export at par with the IT sector. He also called for expedited visa facilitation, reinstatement of e-visas, and simplified biometric processes to accelerate growth in the China market.The President further announced capacity-building programmes, including First Responder and Generative AI workshops, aimed at equipping members with advanced technological skills. He also unveiled IATO’s upgraded website featuring enhanced member access, circular tracking, and an integrated communication dashboard.

Presenting the Annual Report, Sunil Mishra, Honorary Secretary of IATO, reviewed the association’s key policy interventions, advocacy initiatives, and international engagements. He expressed concern over the sharp reduction in the Ministry of Tourism’s overseas marketing budget—from INR 33 crores to INR 3 crores—and called for a minimum INR 1,000 crores annual marketing allocation to meet the 30-million foreign tourist target by 2028.

Mishra reiterated the need for Tax Refund for Tourists (TRT), deemed export status for inbound operators, and enhanced Marketing Development Assistance (MDA). He also highlighted IATO’s active participation in leading international trade shows such as WTM London, ITB Berlin, FITUR Madrid, ATM Dubai, and GITB Jaipur.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of IATO’s commitment to collaborative growth and a more digitally empowered, policy-driven, and globally competitive tourism ecosystem for India.
